Autism Evaluations
Are you concerned about your child's development?
Are you seeking an evaluation for your child due to concerns for autism?
Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person thinks, learns, and experiences the world. It is called a "spectrum" because it can affect people in many different ways, with a wide range of strengths and challenges.
Some common characteristics of autism include difficulty with social interactions, communication challenges, and a preference for routines or repetitive behaviors. People with autism may also have unique ways of learning and processing information, and they may show strong interests in certain topics or activities.
It’s important to know that autism is different for each person. Some individuals may need more support in daily life, while others may be more independent. Early diagnosis and support can make a big difference, helping children and adults with autism lead fulfilling lives, develop their skills, and reach their full potential.
Everyone with autism is unique, so it’s helpful to understand and support their individual needs.
A licensed clinician can help with an evaluation and assist with providing your child with strategies to best manage the symptoms and embrace the strengths that autism can provide.
Please discuss concerns related to your child's development with your Pediatrician and if interested in pursuing an evaluation, please contact me. Some early signs for autism are presented below:
- Developmental regression in language
- Delays in nonverbal communicative behaviors (e.g., pointing, waving)
- Use of another's body as a tool (e.g., placing your hand on the door when wanting it opened)
- Inconsistent or poor response to name
- Repetitive body mannerisms (e.g., finger posturing, toe walking, hand flapping)
- Repetitive language (e.g., repeating words or phrases, communicating using scripts)
- Repetitive use of toys/objects
- Difficulties with transitions or changes in routine
- Sensory aversions and/or seeking behaviors (e.g., noise sensitivity, mouthing objects)
Seeking an autism evaluation can help parents get the support they need to understand their child better, advocate for their needs, and guide them toward the appropriate services
What does an Autism Evaluation at Wildflower Behavioral Health Services Look Like?
Autism evaluations are conducted for children and adolescents ages 2-14 at Wildflower Behavioral Heatlh Services.
When initiating an autism evaluation at Wildflower Behavioral Health Services, you will first be asked to complete an intake document. Once the intake document is received and reviewed, someone will contact you for scheduling and to provide additional measures (e.g., behavioral and adaptive measures) to be completed. It is important that all information be completed fully and returned prior to your appointment. Each evaluation is individualized to meet the needs of the child and family. An evaluation consists of a 2-4 hour appointment in which various tests will be administered and a diagnosis (if clinically indicated) will be provided along with recommendations at the end of the appointment. Families often wait months for a diagnostic evaluation and then additional weeks to receive the official diagnosis and recommendations. At Wildflower Behavioral Health Services, we strive to make this process more seamless for families while maintaining high-quality, comprehensive evaluations.
